Progress!

Praise God! I'm making progress! If I don't finish this by the end of tomorrow, it'll be close, at least.

I'm in the middle of a good writing-run, but wanted to pause my work to document my success.

I had reached the point a couple days ago where I knew which ending (already written) I wanted to go with, but needed to finally join that part of the journey with the place where I was. I'm now heavy into the last act, and it's flowing well.

That may change, of course, but right now I'm feeling very good about this long sequence of words! I even took a break from the computer to lay on the floor with a notebook and jot down the next bit. That helps.

So I'm doing it.

I'm getting it.

The end is, once again, in sight.

Sleep-Writing?

 You know how sometimes you have a great idea in the middle of the night and either you don't write it down and can't remember it properly on waking, or you actually have the foresight to jot a note and it's unintelligible in the morning? Well, that didn't happen, but it might as well have. We've had some weather and household things to contend with, so I didn't write at all for the last two days. Today, I opened my WIP and in the last paragraph that I wrote, the penultimate sentence is this: At the car, the farmer handed a note to Lee. I'm nearing the end of the story, and rather than trying to ease into a sweet ending, I'm trying to inject suspense, maybe a nebulous sense of ominous foreshadowing. But WTF did I mean? What is in the note?!?! I know exactly what happened. I have started adding writing time in the evening, when I'm on my computer for other reasons anyway. Maintaining Routine

I find it's important for me to track what I'm doing. While editing I don't count words. I don't count hours. I ensure that I get through a scene a day, sometimes two. ...If I'm honest, this month there have been days when I've gotten stuck in a scene and flip into writing mode instead, finishing the scene the next day. Overall I'm being more diligent with what matters, though.  Every day I: edit, write, study. I also read daily, but I'm not tracking that this month. Too much writing and editing, and I'm trying to build the habit of daily study. It's hard when I'm not going for a degree or anything. Next month I will add a goal to be more diligent on this blog. Weekly, most likely. For now, I'm going through the process. All the nitty-gritty that needs to be done in order to prep for publishing. I just hope I'm doing it right.

Nearing the End?

(The question mark in my title is for the word "nearing".) In my edit of this WIP, I am "nearing" the climax. Again, though, there are a lot of synopses where action should be, so it's more work than it appears. My scrivener folder shows only a few documents left, but they are the BIG part - where resolution happens or doesn't. In fact, I wrote three different possible endings! I know which ending I like best, though, so I'm looking forward to getting there. I just need to sort out the details of how, precisely, my protagonist reaches that point. All of this aside, my brain has been more in the book that I sent out to beta-readers last fall. I set it up for a major edit, then wrote this WIP instead. In the current state of the world, with people staying home and dealing in some way with a world-wide crisis, the epic quest I'm currently editing seems redundant.
